Run In England Beginner Running Groups
A new scheme from England Athletics designed to make running locally accessible for all is being launched across Kent. The initiative called ‘Run in England’ aims to create groups within communities, workplaces and schools to encourage, support and guide beginner runners and recreational runners who run or walk for fitness.
Working in partnership with clubs and communities Run in England groups will provide a welcoming social environment for runners in which people of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels can participate in running to improve their health and well-being.
Chief Executive of England Athletics Mike Summers explained, “Running is a hugely accessible and enjoyable way of getting active and keeping fit.
“We want to be able to offer groups that meet people where they are – in their local area, at their level of ability and at the times that are convenient for them. As people progress they may want to join a running club but this is about helping people to take their first steps in the sport without any pressure or expectation, while offering them a good level of support and encouragement. We expect many people to join the groups will come along not considering themselves to be ‘runners’ at all.”
Run in England are also looking for potential run leaders across the county who would be prepared to take a 1 day Leadership in Running Fitness course and set up a group in their local community, workplace, school or lead a group for their local running club. Run in England leaders need to be enthusiastic, supportive of others and are runners with some experience. This course provides a qualification, leader’s licence and insurance.
Sarah Hinton, County Activator for Kent said: “To be a Run in England Leader the main ingredient is enthusiasm! Our leaders are as wide and varied as our members. They are all ages, paces, sizes, shapes and abilities – and that’s how we like it! Most importantly you don’t need speed to lead. Run in England Leaders can be volunteers, self employed or employed creating local groups held at times and places to suit all people whether that’s at the local community centre or workplace.”
